On a blustery day in downtown Boise, ID I found myself sitting on the sidewalk patio in front of the Neurolux Bar drinking a non- alcoholic Mexican lager with a lime. Why was I sitting there? This was the venue for the night's show. A big band in the 90’s, and radio famous to me.  I was there to cover Tripping Daisy. Traveling with them in support was Jumprope from Huston, TX. They were first up after a little bit of a wait.

Once I was inside I still had about 45 minutes before Jumprope took the stage so I walked around, looked at the merch and visited. A three piece band with drums, bass, and a guitar, Jumprope's vocals create one of the most impressive harmonies I have heard. Taylor Gibson and Chris Dunaway come together with their vocals in a way that's angelic. It reverberates through the room and it’s mesmerizing. The lights and production were simple that night.  The Neurolux being a smaller venue there is not much room for the bells and whistles. Their drummer Nolan Kerbert did an amazing job on the drums bringing the energy and getting fans to move. The bassist used every bit of stage he had available to him and was very entertaining to watch jam on stage and eventually off stage in the crowd that had formed to watch them play. While I sat outside before the show I was able to visit a little with the members and they are absolutely down to earth and a pleasure to be around. All in all they put on a fantastic set and I hope to see their name on next year’s Treefort Music Fest line-up.

Playing a two set show, we had Tripping Daisy from Dallas, TX next. When I say they are radio famous to me it is that I had never seen them live until now. I only knew one song and it is one of my favorite songs. It was the third song of the first set and that song was “I Got A Girl”. It was one of those moments I put the cameras down and just sang along with the band. It’s one of those songs I turn the radio way up for and sing loudly. The first set they played was their album “I am an Elastic Firecracker” and they played it in its entirety. This set was pretty straight forward and full of energy. Tim DeLaughter was an absolute presence on stage. Philip Karnats brought out a homemade guitar that was fantastic as much as it was simple. It was the only time I have seen a guitar crafted out of 12 x 2 board, and he had finished building it the day before the tour started. The second set was a mash up of various songs from their other 3 albums. One of note is “Pillar” which is found on “Jesus Hits Like An Atom Bomb”. The version they performed was not the one on the album. It’s the original version, and has been released as a single. Which happens to be their first release in 26 years.

When they played their second set I sat back and enjoyed the show wondering why all my life I had not delved in deeper to the rest of their music. When Tim said, “Tragicverse” was going to take us on a trip he wasn’t embellishing a thing. I sat there mesmerized as the colors of the lets and the video astro photography was projected upon the band. All I could do was sit there and stare as I was taken away and found myself lost in sound and unaware that I was sitting in a bar on the edge of downtown Boise. The visuals didn’t stop there and I found myself fascinated with what they had produced for their second set still lost in it.

Their set ended and I hung around and visited. Mostly this was to bring myself back to reality and let the bands know I appreciated a fantastic show. Although it was an intimate crowd in an intimate venue, both bands played like there were thousands. It was a great way to spend a Saturday Night.
