On a beautiful Wednesday evening I found myself in Garden City, ID for my first show of the year at The Revolution Concert House. The weather was nice enough it had me wanting more outdoor concerts. I am ready for summer nights at an amphitheater.

Tonight we stood in line to see August Burns Red Co-Headling with The Amity Affliction. I have been pretty excited for this show all month. April in general was a big month of shows and what better way to close the month out. They also had Boundaries and HEAVENSGATE with them as supporting acts. I was also excited for Boundaries having missed them last year. HEAVENSGATE was a new name to me and I had not heard of them before so I was looking forward to listening to their music and seeing them perform.

HEAVENSGATE from Melbourne, Australia took to the stage first. Keeping their lighting simple compared to the rest of the night, they did not skimp on energy. Their lead singer Nazareth Tharatt probably ran 100 laps or more on the risers at the front of the stage. Kind of got distracting but I still loved the energy he was bringing to the show. They brought a nu-metalcore sound to the Revolution, although I prefer to call it Post Nu-metal. Tharatt’s vocals rang throughout the venue getting fans amped up for the upcoming bands. I will be keeping my eye on this group. I feel we will hear more from them in the future.

Next we had Boundaries out of Hartford, CT. I was supposed to go and photograph them last year about this time but had plans change at the last minute. This had me excited to see what I missed. I certainly missed a lot. The level of energy they bring to stage is raw and electric. The fans were moving from the beginning to the end of the night. The lead vocals of Mathew McDougal were solid, with the bassist and drummer bringing in the back up vocals. This band would start two trends for the rest of the night, crowd surfing and playing a slower song with phone lights being held high in the air. The crowd surfers may have caught the security a little off guard but they worked hard to make sure they were catching everyone. As for the overall production Boundaries lived a lot in the red using the touring lights for their set helping to build up the light show through the night. It was a good set and I am glad I didn’t miss them this time.

Next we had the first of this co-headlined tour also coming here from Australia. With an amazing rig of LED boards, wash, beams, spots and the like The Amity Affliction took the stage in a subtle stage outline of green lights. Needless to say the fans were ready for them and it was not long before we had our first surfers of this set coming over the barricade. Not to many though, not like later in the night. I had not seen them live before and was excited to see their performance, they did not disappoint.  Joel Birch hit the crowd with his deep powerful distorted vocals followed up by the clean vocal sound of Jonathan Reeves the newest member and bassist. Coming in with some back up vocals was Dan Brown on guitar. The drummer Joe Longobardi, although hard to see sitting on his throne high up on the riser, was coming through loud and clear. They brought it all together playing multiple songs from their 1st album with Reeves as their newest member, “House of Cards” released on the 24th of April. Their overall show was amazing for this first timer and I hope to catch and cover them again in the Future.

It was August Burns Red from Lancaster, PA who took the headliner spot for this show of the tour. With similar intro lights but in blue this and the LED boards running visuals we waited in anticipation for the band to take the stage. The drummer, Matt Grenier came up to his perch above the band and the crowd, raised his fist and the crowd roared. Followed shortly by the rest of the band. Jake Luhrs hit the stage and made his presence known with his impeccable vocals. None of the members hid much behind the riser making themselves seen by the fans. It was at the beginning of this set I experienced the waterfall of crowd surfers which at times kept me and the other photographers stuck between the sub by the stage. I could not help but laugh at the deluge of human bodies coming our way. This would happen on and off through the night. As for the music it was amazing as always playing “Behemoth”, and “The Nameless” singles recently released from their upcoming album “Seasons of Surrender”. This album is being released on the 5th of June this year. With a 4 man drum solo nearing the end of the set my cup was full for the night.

It had been an amazing night. To top it off, something I have rarely ever seen but really appreciate seeing was Luhrs and Grenier came out into the barricade and met with their fans. I feel actions like this are fleeting with headlining bands and I get why. It’s truly appreciated when they do this. This only capped off a rather great night of music with only a few hiccups when it came to the crowd surfers
