“Rock and roll is a horny beast”. I don’t know about that but when we heard that we chuckled and wondered what was about to happen. This was how the night started at the Treefort Music Hall in Boise. When Hawthorne Heights stopped in on the Lonely World Tour with Let Live and Creeper. This was a wild night of music and performance. It left me speechless at some points or talking too much about what I was seeing and it was all worth it. This will be a show I won't forget for some time.
Creeper from Southampton, UK was first to take the stage. Talking with others we were not sure who they were but nonetheless were excited to hear them. I had my guesses and what they would sound like and I was a bit off. They have a sound that reminds me of “The Lost Boys” . They sound like rock out of the late 80’s early 90’s. The drums, the guitars, keys and the lead vocals from William von Ghould (Will Gould) come together in the vampire escapade on the stage. This horror rock meets glam rock left a lasting impression with me like a mesmerizing gaze and I am ok with that. I will be listening to them for some time.
Letlive came on next and before we were into the first song I was given a shower of water and spit from the lead singer Jason Butler. Talking to others, I came in with the expectation things were about to get wild and I was not let down. This post hardcore, experimental band from L.A. was full of energy from spitting water into the air to smashing a garbage can on the stage and a little of the drums putting the crash into the crash cymbal. Eventually at one point the mic got stuck in the rafters instead coming back down it stayed hung over the rafter leaving Jason from that spot the way he improvised and adapted was awesome. Near the end of the night the drummer even joined in the mischief taking a ride on the palms of fans by going for a little surf. Their music itself kind of lives somewhere around grunge, with hints of Chevelle in there getting heavy at points and other points it slows down a bit. The clean vocals and solid guitar and drums bring it all together for me, it wakes me up and draws me in. This is another band I will be listening to for a while and keeping an eye out for more shows.
Now by this point we have had the dark vampire glam rock energy of Creeper. Then there was the chaotic off the walls energy brought to us by Jason Butler and Letlive. Well next up was Hawthorne Heights from Dayton, OH. Being an emo at heart I am very familiar with their music. When the music started the EMO energy filled the room and every elder emo was a kid again. The black hair, eye liner, and finger nails, singing and dancing to every song. Very fan oriented when up on stage, throughout the night JT Woodruff would often break between songs to share how the past 20+ years performing has been and thanked us every single time for making it happen. Nearing the end of the set they played a Casey Calvert tribute on the LED screens at the back of the stage followed by “Bring You Back”. The crowd brought out their lights for this song. The second to last song was a new song “Like a Cardinal” which hasn’t been released yet but is being released on the 20th. I enjoyed the song and it should be given a listen when it is available. Closing the night out everyone got to the song that they all wanted to hear. J.T. came down on the barricade to get closer to fans and sing “Ohio is for Lovers” ending the set and the night.
Overall this was a great show. The energy between the bands was all over the place and kinda left me feeling a little shell shocked. This didn't take away from the show one bit if anything it added to it. Getting to hear the “If Only You Were Lonely” albums in its entirety was amazing. Being introduced to the music of Creeper and Letlive was absolutely worth it. Never miss the supporting acts just to see the headliner. You never know what you will miss out on. On to the next shows I hope to see you out there.
