The Into Dust Tour came through the Knitting Factory Boise on a warmer March evening. It was met by a modest crowd of Boise fans excited to see the band out of Toronto, Canada, The Strumbellas. The support out of Athens, GA, Hotel Fiction took the stage first.
Hotel Fiction brought their indie rock energy to the Knit stage to kick off the night. Low lights of blue to start it out set the mood. The crowd themselves still hadn't filled in the room but that was ok. Those that were there, were enjoying themselves dance and taking in the music and the show. Hotel Fiction’s accompaniment consisted of some keys, drums and 4 guitars for some of their songs. Bringing in the vocals were Jade Ireland(Keys) and Jessica Thompson(lead guitar). There sound lives in a space of it own. Very modern and alternative to most mainstream rock. Its not hard to listen to at all and worth catching again when that chance arrives. Upon writing this they have wrapped up their portion of the tour with The Strumbellas. So keep your eyes pealed for future show announcements.
The Strumbellas came to the stage to a very excited crowd. With two guitars and a violin to the side lit by some ground lights and the drums and Dave on the synth/keys on the other side. Taking center stage was lead vocals and guitar, Jimmy Chaveau. Full energy when they kicked their set off The Strumbellas made the modest crowd feel like a sold out crowd. Easy to listen too, even better to dance too. It seemed as if every knew the lyrics to all of there songs. Even when they played songs from their most recent EP “Burning Bridges Into Dust”. The fast paced punchy upbeat sound in ways hides some of the more somber narratives of their lyrics. This leads me to understand why the would be called gothic folk. Heavy on the acoustic guitars this is the kind of music you can play around a campfire or back yard get together and would set a summer vibe at anytime of the year. It’s warm and has strong lyricism through out. It certainly worth catching their show if you can and i would recommend you should.
Over all the night was vibrant the venue staff were friendly as always. The crowd was happy to be there on thursday even the it was modest in size it was huge on the energy. This could be seen in the performance of both bands. It was a great night for the upbeat sounds The Strumbellas brought to the Knitting Factory here in Boise. As for Hotel Fiction, it was my first time hearing their music and I enjoyed it thoroughly and look forward to having them back when they do come back through.
